Document: Viral infections may be quite common in patients requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission or in ICU patients showing worsening in their condition. Many clinical syndromes like community acquired pneumonia, worsening of chronic obstructive airway disease, ventilator associated pneumonia, weaning failure, unexplained fever, acute respiratory distress syndrome, acute meningoencephalitis, acute myocarditis, etc. may be attributable to viral etiologies. The culprit organism should be identified in order to initiate specific treatment and to plan preventive strategies. Targeted microbiological investigations with better sensitivity and specificity, renders help in this direction. Intensivists should be sensitized to all the possible presentations of viral infections in ICU, so that these are diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.
