We demonstrate the economic feasibility of child care subsidies to circumvent the tradeoff between school closures and healthcare worker absenteeism in the majority of US counties. Child care subsidies may play a critical role in maintaining the healthcare work force, and such actions could help reduce preventable harm resulting from school closures. Our study provides a step towards informing future work on better understanding the effects of locally targeted nonpharmaceutical interventions in the event of disease outbreak.
