In particular, school closures are often deployed earlier than more extensive social distancing measures. Yet, they can be costly, particularly for low-income families who may rely on lunch programs and be unable to afford childcare [50, 51] , and our analysis suggests that they may only slightly reduce the pace of transmission and peak hospital surge.
