Document: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we demonstrate that serum levels of IL-6 are significantly elevated in the setting of severe COVID-19 disease. Meta-analysis of the available data indicates that such increased levels are significantly associated with adverse clinical outcomes, including ICU admission, ARDS, and death. Patients with such complicated forms of COVID-19 had nearly three-fold higher serum IL-6 levels than those with non-complicated disease. In the single, non-randomized study published investigating the effect of tocilizumab treatment, decreased levels of serum IL-6, improved clinical and radiological status, and the absence of mortality were observed.
