Document: This paper presents the design of an optimal stand-alone hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) with storage for supplying medical facilities in sub-Saharan Africa, so that they have uninterrupted access to power while serving patients under critical conditions. The work has been motivated by the current Covid-19 pandemic which is plaguing the world and claiming lives. Two hospitals in Tanzania in the sites of Upanga and Ngamiani were chosen due to their presence of adequate solar and wind renewable resources. The load profile for Upanga and Ngamiani indicated an average energy consumption of 20.26 kWh/day and 16.22 kWh/day, respectively. The optimal hybrid configuration chosen for both these locations included a combination of solar PV and diesel generator with storage having a total net present cost of $63, 136.93 for Upanga and just $51, 544.75 for Ngamiani. © 2021 IEEE.
