Snippet: We calibrate R 0 by counting the number of people an index case can infect in the model. This captures not only shedding kinetics, but behavior in response to illness (tendency to stay home) and age-dependent mixing patterns. We set transmissibility of coronavirus in the model by multiplying contact probabilities by the scalar β, which we can set in the model. Document: We calibrate R 0 by counting the number of people an index case can infect in the model. This captures not only shedding kinetics, but behavior in response to illness (tendency to stay home) and age-dependent mixing patterns. We set transmissibility of coronavirus in the model by multiplying contact probabilities by the scalar β, which we can set in the model. We derive the relationship between R 0 and β by running the model with different values of β and counting the number of people an index case infects in a fully susceptible population. For each value of β that we test, we infect one randomly selected individual in the population. We fit a line through the average number of secondary cases for each value of β tested.
