Title: An interferonâ€Î³â€related cytokine storm in SARS patients Cord-id: kt3rru9r Document date: 2004_12_15

Snippet: Fourteen cytokines or chemokines were analyzed on 88 RTâ€PCRâ€confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) patients. IFNâ€Î³, ILâ€18, TGFâ€Î², ILâ€6, IPâ€10, MCPâ€1, MIG, and ILâ€8, but not of TNFâ€Î±, ILâ€2, ILâ€4, ILâ€10, ILâ€13, or TNFRI, were highly elevated in the acute phase sera of Taiwan SARS patients. Document: Fourteen cytokines or chemokines were analyzed on 88 RTâ€PCRâ€confirmed severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) patients. IFNâ€Î³, ILâ€18, TGFâ€Î², ILâ€6, IPâ€10, MCPâ€1, MIG, and ILâ€8, but not of TNFâ€Î±, ILâ€2, ILâ€4, ILâ€10, ILâ€13, or TNFRI, were highly elevated in the acute phase sera of Taiwan SARS patients. IFNâ€Î³ was significantly higher in the Ab(+) group than in the Ab(−) group. IFNâ€Î³, ILâ€18, MCPâ€1, MIG, and IPâ€10 were already elevated at early days post fever onset. Furthermore, levels of ILâ€18, IPâ€10, MIG, and MCPâ€1 were significantly higher in the death group than in the survival group. For the survival group, IFNâ€Î³ and MCPâ€1 were inversely associated with circulating lymphocytes count and monocytes count, but positively associated with circulating neutrophils count. It is concluded that an interferonâ€Î³â€related cytokine storm was induced post SARS coronavirus infection, and this cytokine storm might be involved in the immunopathological damage in SARS patients.
