Failure to carry out autopsies has far reaching consequences, not only for the confirmation of a correct diagnosis, but also for an adequate planning of the treatment, and therefore the prognosis, of future cases. Autopsies of patients dying of COVID 19, together with subsequent studies with PCR and electron microscope, have revealed the multisystemic affectation of this disease and, in some cases, alterations in coagulation due to endothelial injury similar, or superimposed on, thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA).
