Because of mild or no symptomatology, transmission from these asymptomatic carriers happens at a higher contact rate than symptomatic individuals. We parameterize these cases with the effective contact rate (transmission rate) β 2 , different from the transmission rate from symptomatic infectious, defined as β 1 . As such, susceptible individuals can become infected by coming in contact with both asymptomatic (A) and symptomatic infectious (I) individuals, which together compose the infected class. Individuals in the I compartment exhibit clinical symptoms.
