Avian influenza strains have caused numerous outbreaks with high mortality, including children, and are potential causes of pandemic influenza. Several zoonotic paramyxoviruses, including Nipah and Hendra viruses, have emerged as occasional causes of sever outbreaks of respiratory tract illness in children and adults.
