Snippet: Ion mobility separations coupled to mass spectrometry (IM-MS) have received much attention for their ability to provide complementary structural information to solution-phase-based separations, as well as to aid in the identification of unknown compounds. While IM-MS is an increasingly powerful analytical technique, significant bottlenecks related to the resolution of measurements have kept it from becoming broadly applied for biological analyses. Document: Ion mobility separations coupled to mass spectrometry (IM-MS) have received much attention for their ability to provide complementary structural information to solution-phase-based separations, as well as to aid in the identification of unknown compounds. While IM-MS is an increasingly powerful analytical technique, significant bottlenecks related to the resolution of measurements have kept it from becoming broadly applied for biological analyses. Presently, IM-MS-based measurements also remain limited in terms of their sensitivity as compared to state of the art MS-based approaches alone. Structures for Lossless Ion Manipulations (SLIM)-based IM separations provide a basis for overcoming these bottlenecks, addressing issues associated with resolution and sensitivity in the omics, and potentially opening the door to much broader application.
