Samples used for assay validation were from persons PCR-diagnosed infections with of human coronaviruses (HCoV-229E, NL63 or OC43), SARS, MERS, or with a range of other respiratory viruses ( Table 1) as published previously (6) . Samples from patients with recent CMV, EBV or mycoplasma pneumoniae infection were included as these have a higher likelihood of causing false positive results. We used serum samples from 45 healthy blood donors (Cohort A) as negative controls; Sanquin Blood Bank (Rotterdam, the Netherlands) obtained written informed consent for research use.
