The intra-and inter-patient variability of the viral genome plays a pivotal role in all the abovementioned efforts, since it affects the compatibility of molecular diagnostics but also impairs the effectiveness of the vaccines and the serological assays by altering the antigenicity of the virus. Intra-host low-frequency variants are also the main source of resistance to anti-viral drugs.
