We found that ACE2 is mainly expressed in arterial vascular cells in fibrotic lungs, which might be essential for SARS-CoV-2 to enter the bloodstream and to start its circulatory spreading. We observed higher enrichment of ACE2 expression in cardiomyocytes of failed adult human hearts, and higher gene expression of ACE2 in cells infected by the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) or middle east respiratory syndrome-coronavirus (MERS-CoV). Our findings indicate that patients with pulmonary fibrosis, heart failure, and virus infection have a higher risk and are more susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection.
