Mathematical modeling of COVID-19 containment strategies with considerations for limited medical resources

Here we propose a Distancing-SEIRD model, referred to as Model 2, that is similar to the first SEIRD model, except that it now directly takes into account the proportion of individuals who are social distancing. In Model A.2, the S, E, and I compartments have been stratified into two subgroups to capture the dynamics of the social distancing protocols recommended by public health officials. Specifically, individuals that are not abiding by social distancing regulations, referred to in this work as "mixers", are denoted by subscript M . Individuals who are following social distancing guidelines, referred to in this work as "distancers", are denoted by subscript D. We assume, at the outset, that a constant proportion of individuals, denoted by θ, practice social distancing while social mixers make up a proportion (1 − θ) of the population.
