Document: This argument applies only to the question of whether a different order of transitions would be found if the calculation were done at room temperature, not whether the absolute energy would differ from the 0 K value, which of course it would. We are saying that it would differ by essentially the same amount for each case that we studied. However, there is no question that further work is needed to fully confirm this. These considerations of degrees of freedom, and water structure vs. protein structure, are, so far, essentially qualitative arguments. A quantitative estimate of the energy difference will have to await further advances in computer capacity. Estimating free energy and other temperature dependent properties from the harmonic oscillator approximation is unlikely to be better than the qualitative estimates, as the VSD is too complex for the harmonic oscillator approximation to be any more accurate than the considerations above; mode coupling is likely to be extensive, and the spectrum of frequencies not simply Debye like, although that would be a zeroth approximation, although probably not all the way to room temperature. The modes are not a sum of independent local modes.
