As of 2016, the population of the country was about 44 million. Argentina is made up of 23 provinces and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires. The first Spanish settlement in the territories of what is now Argentina dates back to 1526. What was to become Argentina’s main port and city, Buenos Aires, was founded in 1536 but due to repeated attacks by the native population it was abandoned until 1580 when it was re-established. The colonization of the territory was mostly undertaken from neighbouring countries in the north.
