First a subject was instructed to step into a confined space and was sprayed with saccharine solution from the nebulizer. Every subject for every test was able to taste saccharine within fifteen seconds of initial exposure. Next the subject was instructed to drink water to neutralize their palate, then was fit with the respirator. Each mask was tested multiple times with no regard for test order (surgical mask was test before and after the N95 comparable respirators for example to ensure negative result was not false negative).
