Notably, for China and South Korea we acquire more granular data than the the data hosted on the John Hopkins University (JHU) interactive dashboard 15 ; we confirm that the number of confirmed cases closely match between the two data sources (see Appendix Figure A2 ). To conduct the econometric analysis, we merge the epidemiological and policy data to form a single data set for each country.
