Anti-microbial immunity is impaired in COPD patients with frequent exacerbations

A cohort of patients with COPD were monitored prospectively. Patients were stratified according to exacerbation frequency in the preceding year with patients who experienced > 2 exacerbation episodes classified as 'frequent'. Sputum samples were taken at presentation with exacerbation associated with positive virus detection and 2 weeks during exacerbation. Sputum mRNA expression of (a) IFNβ, IFNλ2/3 and IFNλ1 (b) 2'-5'OAS, viperin and Mx1 was measured by quantitative PCR. Sputum protein concentrations of (c) CXCL10/IP-10 and CCL5/RANTES were measured by ELISA.
