Document: To ensure the safety of our staff, virus in patient samples is inactivated at the time of sample collection (see " Sample Collection " in Methods), meaning that infectious virus is never present in our testing facility. As a further precaution, our laboratory operates under BSL-2+ conditions, providing a higher standard of safety than the BSL-2 conditions typically employed with inactivated SARS-CoV-2. Especially stringent PPE requirements were established, including a disposable outer layer and N95 masks fitted for each staff member. The additional precautions in our level of biosafety and PPE result from our determination to maximally protect the health of our volunteer staff (see Personnel Biosafety and HIPAA Training section below).
