Title: A Bayesian approach for detecting a disease that is not being modeled Document date: 2020_2_28

Snippet: An outbreak of an unmodeled disease is signaled by the presence of atypical patients in the monitor window. Because this is done by statistically comparing the features of the patients in the monitor window to the features of the patients in the baseline window, the presence of only a few atypical patients in the monitor window might not cause an alarm. Document: An outbreak of an unmodeled disease is signaled by the presence of atypical patients in the monitor window. Because this is done by statistically comparing the features of the patients in the monitor window to the features of the patients in the baseline window, the presence of only a few atypical patients in the monitor window might not cause an alarm. This suggests that we can increase the effectiveness of DUDE by concentrating atypical patients in the monitor window and using them for detection. We have developed a heuristic method to do this. First, we compute the probability of each finding using all of the patients in the monitor window. Then we select patients in the monitor window whose findings are least likely given those probabilities. These selected patient cases comprise the new monitor window. Then, for comparison, we do the same with the patients in the baseline window to create a new baseline window comprised of the least likely patients.
