Title: Apolipoprotein D in Lipid Metabolism and Its Functional Implication in Atherosclerosis and Aging Document date: 2008_12_12

Snippet: In addition to its role in cholesterol homeostasis, apoD is involved in triglyceride metabolism. Epidemiological studies identified three distinct missense mutations, namely Phe36Val, Tyr108Cys and Thr158Lys in the apoD gene in African populations. Each of these three mutations is associated with significantly elevated plasma triglyceride levels and reduced HDL-cholesterol levels, a plasma lipid profile that is characteristic of metabolic syndrom.....
Document: In addition to its role in cholesterol homeostasis, apoD is involved in triglyceride metabolism. Epidemiological studies identified three distinct missense mutations, namely Phe36Val, Tyr108Cys and Thr158Lys in the apoD gene in African populations. Each of these three mutations is associated with significantly elevated plasma triglyceride levels and reduced HDL-cholesterol levels, a plasma lipid profile that is characteristic of metabolic syndrome [52, 53] . Although the underlying molecular basis remains to be defined, these clinical data implicate abnormal apoD function in the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome.
