Since HI titers reflect antibodies specific for the attachment site of HN whereas neutralizing antibodies reflect broader antibody responses against antigenic sites throughout the HN and F proteins, the instances of relatively higher neutralizing titers might reflect a disproportionately greater contribution from additional epitopes in the HN and F proteins.
