It has been proposed that this lack of protective immunity could be related to a low prior exposure to influenza [11] . Interestingly, the high level of consanguinity among the islanders, together with evidence that genetic bottlenecks occurred in the history of the population [39] , may also have led to the overrepresentation of an unusual genotype involved in the control of influenza.
