Document: Yeasts, as an eukaryotic organism, has the capacity to perform post-translational modifications. In addition, they can be used even in high throughput processes and glyco-engineering enables the expression of recombinant proteins with human-like glycosylation. Nevertheless, the production of full-size immunoglobulins remains a challenge. Compared to yeasts, filamentous fungi are more difficult for the generation of transformed clones, but they have a long tradition for the usage in biotechnology and they have partially been used for the expression of IgGs. In contrast, the development of protozoa as an expression system for recombinant proteins and antibodies has just been started and is still in a developmental stage. However, the mammalian-like glycosylation pattern presents them a promising candidate for further exploitation.
