Although the low levels present on cells were not enough to affect either IAV and IBV infection, we did determine that higher levels, such as those found on mouse erythrocytes (ϳ45% O-Ac), were able to block IAV HA binding and decrease IAV NA cleavage efficiency in a strain-dependent manner. It is possible, therefore, that if higher levels are present on secreted proteins in mucus, they could inhibit infection prior to the virus reaching the cell surface. Further analysis of mucus O-acetylation in IAV hosts would be necessary to determine whether 7,9-O-and 9-O-Ac could contribute to the barrier function of mucus in respiratory tissues (41) .
