The country's life expectancy and mean temperature (°C) in February and March 2020 were added as control variables in all the models in order to rule out potentially confounding effects. In fact, infection rates and mortality rates may have been influenced by the subject's age (i.e., the older, the more vulnerable) and climate conditions (i.e., the higher the temperature, the less contagious the virus).
