The virus was tentatively named Hypsugopoxvirus (HYPV), according to the bat species from which it was isolated. Phylogenetic analyses suggest that HYPV belongs to the Chordopoxvirinae subfamily, revealing the highest similarity (85%) with Eptesipoxvirus (EPTV) detected from the microbat Eptesicus fuscus in WA, USA in 2011, which is associated with bat necrosuppurative osteomyelitis in multiple joints. HYPV is the first poxvirus detected in bats in Europe and its viral ecology and disease associations should be investigated further.
