Document: Recently, at different times, exotic diseases (serotype O foot and mouth disease [FMD] , porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome [PRRS] and classical swine fever [CSF] ) have entered South Africa. Outbreaks of FMD, caused by the endemic South African territory (SAT) serotypes, have occurred in cattle in the FMD-free zones, and the impact of these outbreaks to the industry was minimised through the rapid intervention and collaborative efforts of the national and provincial veterinary services (National Department of Agriculture [NDA] 2001) . Early in 2012, the African swine fever (ASF) virus left its traditional control area in South Africa to cause outbreaks in the ASFfree areas. Officially, South Africa is free from all of the diseases used in this report.
