Snippet: Immunoassay using fluorescent antibody-nanoparticle conjugates may be applied for the detection of Gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli or P. aeruginosa. Conjugates of functionalized silica nanoparticles with FITC allow for the rapid detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 by flow cytometry in beef samples. Document: Immunoassay using fluorescent antibody-nanoparticle conjugates may be applied for the detection of Gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli or P. aeruginosa. Conjugates of functionalized silica nanoparticles with FITC allow for the rapid detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 by flow cytometry in beef samples. Rabbit anti-E. coli O157:H7 antibody was used to recognize E. coli O157:H7. Protein A, a stable protein extracted from S. aureus, was used for antibody coupling on silica nanoparticle surfaces. The method is rapid, selective and sensitive for the detection of E. coli [59] .
