Thus, it is normally thought that these interventions can only be justifiably imposed if there is a strong case in favour of them. But in many instances in which quarantine and isolation are adopted, and particularly when they are adopted as emergency measures, there is a strong case in favour. These interventions are normally deployed to prevent potentially devastating consequences of infectious disease. Such consequences are discussed in the next section.
