We found that SARS-CoV N interacts with Smad3 and enhances Smad3-p300 interaction, which specifically potentiates the Smad3mediated transcriptional responses of TGF-such as the expression of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) [98] . At the same time, the SARS-CoV N interferes with the complex formation between Smad3 and Smad4 and inhibits TGF--induced Smad4-mediated proapoptotic genes expression and cell apoptosis (Figure 4(a) ).
