Additionally, to correct for the potential influence of age and sex on the biomarker concentrations, we performed multiple linear regression analysis (forced entry method) with the biomarker of interest as dependent variable and age, sex and the assigned group (infection/no infection or bacterial/viral infection) as independent variable.
