Study of the lower airways by means of e.g. protected brushes during bronchoscopy is needed for further analysis of bacterial and viral (sub)populations including comparison with PCR and culture results. Studies comparing the respiratory virome during stable disease and exacerbations are needed to determine a potential correlation between the virome/bacteriome during stable state and disease progression or exacerbation frequency.
