Document: In light of the importance of effercotysis in resolution of inflammation and the reported defects in apoptotic cell removal in chronic inflammatory lung diseases, it is not surprising that evaluation of potential therapeutic strategies aimed at enhancing apoptotic cell uptake gained a lot of attention in recent years [72, 73] . Strikingly, glucocorticoids, which are the most commonly used class of drugs in the treatment of asthma and COPD, increase apoptotic cell engulfment by macrophages in vitro [127] and restore the efferocytic function of airway macrophages from patients with severe asthma [97] . Upregulation of the TAM receptor MerTK [128, 129] and downregulation of SIRPα [130] might be responsible for the pro-efferocytic activity of glucocorticoids in macrophages.
