Subsequently, the sample was spun to remove the unwanted cell debris. Chloroform was then added to the TRIzol fraction causing a phase separation into the aqueous and organic phase. The aqueous phase, which contains the RNA, was carefully removed into a clean eppendorf tube. It was then further processed with the RNeasy ® Mini Kit (QIAGEN) according to manufacturer's instructions, before being used for gene expression studies as described above. No DNAse treatment was performed during the total RNA extraction.
