Document: The atherosclerosis vascular disease (ASVD) is caused by an inflammation of the arterial wall that is caused by increased cholesterol blood levels and an accumulation of cholesterol crystals in the subendothelial spaces leading to arteriosclerotic plaque formation [127] . It is noteworthy that the cholesterol represents a maximum of 10% of the total mass of plaque. Consequently, the elasticity of the artery walls is reduced, pulse pressure can be modified and blood clot can be formed (Scheme 6). Cardiovascular disease is currently the leading cause of death worldwide. As plasma levels of cholesterol are associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, the use of CDs to solubilize and to remove cholesterol (and plaque) is very promising to combat this deadly condition.
