This residue is located in a turn described by the polypeptide chain where it leaves the subdomain interface (see below) and reaches the surface of the molecule. The side chain makes a hydrophobic contact across the subdomain interface and is also contacting the side chain of Phe406 of a symmetry-related SUD core dimer in the crystal lattice in the monoclinic crystal form (this also applies to two of the four monomers in the triclinic form).
