HIV infection can lead to apoptosis of CD4 Tlymphocytes, defective T and B lymphocyte function, decreased production of IFN-γ, IL-2 and immunoglobulins, and decreased NK cell activity (97) (98) (99) . This leads to not only increased risk of secondary bacterial infections but also increased susceptibility to other viruses and intracellular organisms such as mycobacteria and Pneumocystis jiroveci.
