Snippet: Rotavirus infection has also been associated with secondary bacterial infections (21) . Although, the exact mechanisms leading to sepsis and organ dysfunction are unknown, a leading hypothesis entails translocation of bacteria and endotoxin through damaged intestinal epithelium into the splanchnic circulation, systemically increasing production of nitric oxide and circulating pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF and IL-1β, and high mobility group.....
Document: Rotavirus infection has also been associated with secondary bacterial infections (21) . Although, the exact mechanisms leading to sepsis and organ dysfunction are unknown, a leading hypothesis entails translocation of bacteria and endotoxin through damaged intestinal epithelium into the splanchnic circulation, systemically increasing production of nitric oxide and circulating pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF and IL-1β, and high mobility group box 1 protein, resulting in sequential organ failure (96) . HIV infection can lead to apoptosis of CD4 Tlymphocytes, defective T and B lymphocyte function, decreased production of IFN-γ, IL-2 and immunoglobulins, and decreased NK cell activity (97) (98) (99) . This leads to not only increased risk of secondary bacterial infections but also increased susceptibility to other viruses and intracellular organisms such as mycobacteria and Pneumocystis jiroveci.
