Snippet: We know that the innate immune system is the fi rst line of response to pathogens, and this response generally includes three events: microbial recognition, activation of signaling pathways, and activation of an effector mechanism. The recognition of pathogens is mediated by TLRs, which are membrane proteins that recognize specifi c pathogens associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). Document: We know that the innate immune system is the fi rst line of response to pathogens, and this response generally includes three events: microbial recognition, activation of signaling pathways, and activation of an effector mechanism. The recognition of pathogens is mediated by TLRs, which are membrane proteins that recognize specifi c pathogens associated molecular patterns (PAMPs). TLRs have an amino terminal leucine rich repeat (LRR) domain and an intracellular carboxyl terminal domain that contains a conserved region known as the toll/intercellular receptor (TIR). The TLR family comprises 10 TLRs (TLR1 to TLR10 have been reported thus far) [9, 10] .
