Genetic factors may have a major impact on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of a particular drug and thereby influence the sensitivity to such a drug in an individual patient with a certain genotype. Pharmacogenetics has a three-fold role in the pharmaceutical industry, which is relevant to the development of personalized medicines: (1) study of the drug metabolism and pharmacological effects, (2) prediction of genetically determined adverse reactions, and (3) drug discovery and development. With the synthetic biology approach, pharmacogenetic knowledge can be used to design drugs with less adverse effects and improved efficacy.
