Document: A randomized clinical trial was performed on a single 1800-cow milking Jersey dairy farm. The primary outcome of interest was resolution of diarrhea. Sample size was calculated based on a 5% significance level, power of 80%, assumption that control (CONT) group calves (no oral immunoglobulin supplementation) were 2 times or more likely to be treated compared to treatment (TRXT) group calves (oral immunoglobulin supplementation), and a difference of at least 2 treatment days between the CONT (5 days) and TRXT group calves (3 days), an SD of 2 treatment days, and a 20% dropout rate because of loss of follow-up or incomplete records. The total sample size required was 102 calves (34 calves per group).
