In that respect, BSE and vCJD are typical emerging epidemics along with AIDS; these diseases are still progressive and being studied. However, new information on the pathogenesis of these diseases is found every year; it is hoped, on the basis of the experience in the EU, that BSE and vCJD can be controlled, and their incidence be lowered gradually. Nevertheless, for risk reduction, strict precautionary principles should be applied since prevention is the most effective way of controlling this emerging disease that has not been experienced before.
