Identification of an enterovirus recombinant with a torovirus-like gene insertion during a diarrhea outbreak in fattening pigs

As a conclusion, this study raises awareness for the presence of many viruses in a porcine diarrheic fecal sample. In fact, it is important to consider the possibility of diarrhea as a result of the replication of a viral intestinal disease complex, where more than one agent might play a role. Given the availability and democratization of next-and third-generation sequencing technologies, this will certainly change the way diagnostics are being performed in the coming decades. However, one should bear in mind that the abundance of information generated with these methods is not easy to interpret and appropriate tools should be developed to help farmers and the pig industry in translating this information into useful management information.
