Nanofabrication technologies were shown to enable the design of synthetic microenvironments that offer new ways to control stem cell fate, e.g. differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells into tissues that most closely match the mechanical properties of the polyacrylamide substrate upon which they are cultured [29] . Mesenchymal stem cells cultured on medium stiffness gels differentiated into muscle cells, whereas those cultured on compliant gels differentiated into neural cells and those cultured on stiff (bone-like) gels differentiated into osteoblasts. By directing the development of stem cells into the desired cell type, synthetic microenvironments facilitate their use for personalized tissue regeneration.
