Thus, even though chimpanzee ct-globin possesses a single pair of basic amino acids (Lys~ and Lys~:), most probably these were not cleaved since no smaller forms of globin-related peptides were detected. Accurate processing demonstrated the conformational dominance of the propeptide and in particular the highly conserved hexapeptide region. This is noteworthy since a-globin is 10 times the size of mature SRIF and nearly twice the size of the proregion itself; thus, it is unlikely that the chimera and native precursor would be structurally related.
