The highly glycosylated S protein stays compact in trimeric state, recognizes receptor on the host cell membrane, and then undergoes a series of conformation changes, proteolysis events and membrane fusion to complete viral entry. For vaccines, clinical diagnosis, early prevention and medication, the S protein is the most significant target.
