Document: To minimize the risk of infectious individuals entering the building where the diagnostic laboratory is housed, 2-4 hours prior to entry the personnel complete a self-screening questionnaire (see supplementary file, Personnel Training and Compliance for our Daily Self Assessment Questionnaire). When entering and moving within the testing facility, all individuals, including equipment technicians and supervisors, must wear appropriate PPE at all times. To enter the testing facility, personnel must put on PPE in the following order: lab coat, disposable isolation gown tied in the back, double gloves with inner gloves over cuffs, N95 respirators, and face shields. Additionally, ankles must not be exposed and all personnel must wear closed shoes, preferably a specific pair that is worn only in the testing laboratory. Disposable PPE items (gowns, gloves) do not leave the testing facility unless enclosed in a biohazard bag that is sprayed externally with 70% ethanol. N95 respirators must be rigorously fitted to each staff member. This fitting is performed by a UC Berkeley EH&S expert who verifies air flow and sealing to ensure protection of the user. For more details on PPE requirements for our personnel, see supplementary file, Personnel Training and Compliance .
